Groundbreaking Ceremony

Foothills Park and Recreation District, Mile High Miracle League and The Colorado Rockies will gather on Monday June 27th at 11:00 am to break ground on the first Miracle Field in Colorado. The field will be located at Foothills Schaefer Athletic complex located at 9750 W. Hampden Avenue, at the intersection of Kipling Blvd and Hwy 285 (Hampden).

The Miracle League field, the first of its kind in Colorado, will be constructed using a synthetic surface to accommodate wheelchairs and other walking assistance devices that will facilitate safe play and use by all participants regardless of their ability. Players team up with a buddy to play baseball, softball and other field sports.

The specialized field will meet a major need in the Denver Metro area. The current grass and turf fields available for play by the disabled are difficult and dangerous for kids in wheelchairs and walkers to navigate. This synthetic surface field will be a safe and easy way for kids to navigate during play.

Current plans call for the field to be finished in September 2005 to allow for a short playing season this year. A full season and league play are scheduled for 2006.

“This is an exciting opportunity to remove barriers for special needs kids and adults and Foothills is proud an honored to be part of this project and to partner with Mile High Miracle League and The Colorado Rockies.” said Bob Easton, Executive Director at Foothills.

The field will cost approximately $435,000 to build and to-date MHML has received partial funding via grants from the Colorado Rockies, LaFarge Corp., Foothills Foundation and other private sources. In addition Saunders Construction will provide construction services for the project and Foothills will provide programming and maintenance services.

The Mile High Miracle League (MHML), a Colorado not for profit organization, was formed in August of 2004. The MHML mission is to provide children and adults in the Denver Metro area a fully functional baseball field that will allow them to participate in the game of baseball regardless of their condition. Every child deserves a chance to play baseball! For player registration, volunteer opportunities, sponsorship and financial donor information please contact the MHML by visiting their website at www.mhmlbb.org or calling 303-979-8828.
